We met at the Oneida Golf & County Club. Johnny was golfing there and I was the beverage cart bartender.
It was at Windjammer’s Sailing Club in Suamico, WI on June 23, 2023.
Johnny borrowed a close family friend’s sailboat to take me on a date. I had just finished a long stretch of night shifts and almost unknowingly canceled the date altogether. He packed a bottle of wine, charcuterie, and seemed so excited to finally go sail again, I couldn't refuse.
It was 90 degrees out with essentially no wind, so it made for a great time to just sit and talk. We reminisced about the sailing trip he and his dad took a year earlier and recalled all our favorite times together in our relationship. Johnny and I kept a journal that we would write in while he had been on that sailing trip. It contained all the messages, notes, letters, poems to each other that we wanted to say in person, but distance separated us. Each time we got together, we would read what we had written to one another and then traded each journal between us - to keep for the next stretch.
Johnny told me that in honor of the trip, he wrote me another note: his proposal speech. It was beautiful, heartfelt, so thoughtful, and emotional. All of our family was waiting for us at the dock when we returned engaged :)
